Children of Elvire Vatovec Prade attended a 2-day language camp in Fiesa, a small resort place on the coast of Adriatic sea. There's a nice educational center 'Breženka' where pupils can have short or long term camps and learn in a real world environment.
This time 5 and 6 class children were learning English two days by exploring water. They created comics ' Super Hero H2O' where they presented and discussed the problem of water pollution. Children played a hoses and ladders board game ' Be waterwise' and discussed how each of them can daily save with water. They also created their own snakes and ladders game where the players have to answer questions about water. At the end pupils had fun with writing riddles about water. Pupils and teachers spent a great time by our beautiful sea being aware of how important it is to keep it clean!

During the "WATER" theme based period  there were a lot of activities, when children were drawing water. There are many ways to do it. Illustration, collage, "drawing music", "expand the view", "make a copy of masterpiece", "fish line" - are some of activities done by children of Centro primary..

COLLAGE

Third grade children made collages of fish and waterfalls. They used blue peaces of magazine pages for background and draw fish with black narrow pen. Waterfalls were made of wool thread ...

DRAW MUSIC

Fourth grade children listened to the symphonic poem "the sea" by famous Lithuanian composer and artist M.K.Čiurlionis. They tried to illustrate music with their pictures. You can listen to the episode of music HERE.

EXPAND THE VIEW

The third grade children tried to expand the pictures of sea views. They sticked photos with sea views on bigger sheet of paper and draw additional view as expansion of the picture...

FISH LINE

There are possibilities to draw illustrations to any story or text, of course, but There were stories, connected wit water. Third grade children read the traditional stories, legends about origin of Lithuanian lakes, rivers and bridges and draw illustrations to those legends.

ILLUSTRATION

The third grade children had fun. They draw any curved line and made fish from that line. Here you can see the steps of doing that. Try it and have fun!

COPY THE MASTERPIECE

Children choose pictures of Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Ivan Aivazovsky and Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. They discussed wthe impressions and the mood of pictures and what are the ways for artists to meke these impressions and moods. We learned a new word "marinist" in our discussion. After children tried to copy pictures and to create not just acopy, but the mood too.

2019.05.30

Class 5c prepared a musical presentation on the theme 'Water'. They sang the Beatles song *Yellow submarine*, played a traditional song * A boat is sailing on the sea* on the euphonium and another traditional instrumental music on the flute and the accordion.
We we so happy to see our Lithuanian friends, to sing together and to learn some Lithuanian words! Thank you so much!

Water is very important in our lives. We need it to survive, but also water can be very dangerous. For example - sea. One minute - you enjoy swimming in the sea and other - you can be captured by treacherous waves. So we decided to create a dance about beautiful but unpredictable sea.  The dance was performed by girls from our school extra curriculum dance group (girls are from different classes).

We “dived” into the world of water sports: We learned about sports that take place in the sea, in rivers, in swimming pool water and on ice.

First, we searched for and found photographs about sports that occur in or on the water and then, we discussed and gathered information. In the end, we created a collage about water sports.

We talked about the role of Water in our daily lives and made a Water Cycle model.

Aim – Objective: To help the pupils discover the amazing journey of water through the Water Cycle and understand how water gets to our houses through experiential learning activities.

The pupils created a story about the Water Cycle.

It was based on an interdisciplinary approach which integrated Language, Environmental Education (EE) and Art.

The “project method”.

We listened to the sound of the waves, holding a nylon sheet and then we entered into the “stormy water”.

We created the sound of the sea with percussion instruments.

We listened to the sound of the rain with the help of plastic bottles.

We blew into a small pipe and listened to a slight whistle, and blew into the water and watched bubbles. Then, we blew into straws, which didn’t make any sound at all! But then, when we blew into the water, small bubbles were created once again.

This semester we occupied ourselves with water with the help of our friend, Droppy, which told us everything she saw, listened and lived during her imaginary journey.

Droppy met Poseidon, the ancient God of the Sea and his wife, Amfitrite. We read a book about him and drew him.

Then, Droppy joined the circle of water. We joined it, too, through videos on You Tube.

Then we talked about where water can be found on earth and made a beautiful poster. We were very sorry to be informed that in many places around the world there is lack of water.

In the end, with Droppy’s help, we wrote and drew in small drops the necessity of water.

5th grade: Students created paintings with chalk. These works refer to the reflections of water and the symmetry that these images create.

Their surprise was great from the result, as well as their engagement with a material like chalk, a material unknown to them.

Then the project was disseminated to the local community, exhibiting the works, in collaboration with the Sailing Club of Chania in Neorio Moro.

During this semester we occupied ourselves with water as the most valuable source of life on our planet. We focused on the potable water, found in lakes and rivers and realized how valuable it is. So, we discussed about ways to save water, as opposed to those that spoil water in every day - life. A slight change of habbits can make the difference to the benefit of the environment! It’s up to us! And, after a lot of discussion, we decided to implement this knowledge on the most famous game, played by children all over the world: “Snakes and ladders”… So, we designed and drew the game on a square cloth, 2,40m X 2,40m, where we play and learn again and again….

You spoil water for no reason? Slide down the snake!

You save water? Climb up the stair!

Do your best for the environment and be the winner!

Do join us and play!

Older students can be great mentors to younger pupils. We have already had many successful mentoring projects in the past in our school. This time  8 grade students Vaiva and Mija became *teachers* for a reading lesson in the 5th grade. Together they read a story about FINBO, the whale, who is sad because he cannot play hide- and- seek with his friends- he's too big! After the reading the pupils are going to write a follow-up story in the next lesson.

But we didn't have any books in our hands. Why? We were reading the story in International Digital Children's Library. Pupils were excited to experience a digital walk through the library for the first time. The mission of this unique library is to support the world's children in becoming effective members of the global community - who exhibit tolerance and respect for diverse cultures, languages and ideas - by making the best in children's literature available online free of charge.

Beacons located along coastlines and harbor entrances have long prevented disasters and saved many lives at sea.

Slovene 4 B class pupils made a working lighthouse, after studying about the electric circuit they  used recycled materials: cardboard, toalet paper rolls, styrofoam and of course a bulb and a battery.

We can't get lost now!

INTERNATIONAL WATER DAY 2019 was celebrated on 22nd March. This year our pupils discussed the importance of saving water in accordance with the main topic of International Water Day 2019. Sustainable Development goal 6 is crystal clear: water for all by 2030, meaning leaving no one behind. But today many people are still living without safe water, struggling to survive.

After discussing the important question children made paper boats and wrote their water-saving slogans on them. They made  a boat regatta and decorated their sea with  shells and stones, collected from our incredibly beautiful Adriatic Sea.

So, will you turn off the water while brushing your teeth, too?

Pupils in classes 5B and 5C experimented with liquid mass and density. During their science project work they weighted different liquids in the same quantity and calculated their mass. Pupils found out that different liquids' weight depends on their density. During their English project pupils continued experimenting with density and made the  Density Tower using water, dish soap, vegetable oil and an ice cube. They learned that ice floats because of its lowest density. Pupils took an active part in these experiments and had enjoyed it very much.

SLOVENIA

Pupils in class 2 C and their teacher Meta used water at Maths  as visual material while teaching / learning parts of the whole. First, pupils used bottle caps, then they did the same mathematical task with water in plastic cups which was a bit more challenging.

During the science lessons they experimented with ice cubes, tested and observed how ice cubes melt if you sprinkle them with salt or put them in water.

Pupils experimented with liquid density and observed how different liquids mix in a *wonder bottle*. They observed the *volcano* effect when they put coloring dye in oil or the bubbles when they turned the bottle upside down and oil came on the surface.

They also learned about life in freshwaters ( rivers, lakes) and life in saltwaters (oceans).

Pupils were asked to visualise and describe their findings and feelings.

Make jelly fish from peace of plastic bag, as it is in the picture... It is not difficult at first time, but it is very important to blow as much air into jelly fish "head" as you can. It will help your pet to float on the water... Use plastic bottle as fish tank.if you eant to make your jelly fish more visible, put some color into water... Our pre- school children just used ink...  Fill your bottle with coloured water and let your jelly fish into it. turn the bottle bottom up - your pet will imediately move to the top of the bottle. Why yoyr pet is always trying to get outside the water?

Follow the order of making jelly fish in our pictures and enjoy it!

You can draw your fish tank, but it will be more realistic if you will use plasticine. Image will be not so flat - you will get simple version of 3D. Children from the 1b class suggest you to try it.

We know, that water turns into steam, when we heat it. Is it possible to turn steam back to the water? Yes. You just need to cool steam and to collect water. Children from 3b class used simple equipment to get woter from steam - two containners for water, hot water, trensperant plastic film nd ice cubes. When hot steam touches cold plastic transperant film, it turns into the water and drops to the sontainer. Now we know new word - CONDENSATION! It is also good ilustration of water circle.

Drop water on plastic....   it becomes a race car! You can move drop on racing track from start to finish and keep the shape of water drop. What keeps the shape of drop? Can we destroy the strong surface of drop? We tried toothpick, but unsuccesfully... Just "magic" toothpick helped us - we dipped it itnto liquid soap before using. Soap destroyed surface of water drop. Soap molecules have special shape and can "ïnsret" between water molecules and to destroy surface. Many interesting questions and answers during this experiment!

Water is great for dissolving a lot of materials. But not for all of them. What you can dissolve in a cup of water? Children from "4b" tried to answer this question by trying... They put salt, sand, starch, sand, ketchup, different groats, soda, citric acid ect... into water and tried to dissolve them. They wrote experiment results in a special table  compared them and discussed. Sometimes results were unexpected - try to put soda and citric acid into the water together.... :)

At first sight water looks the same, but we know that it can be different. Secondgraders tried to gues -what kind of wter is it? Tap water, distilated water, sparkling mineral water, boiled water and still mineral water? Children tried to taste, to smell water and to gues which water it is. Teacher Rasa, Leila's mom and children discussed together, what differeces of teste and smell they feel and how it is possible to identify types of water.

Try it in your class!

Pupils in class 4 C started to work on the theme * Water*.  Water is the most important thing for human survival,  so if for some reason you are not able to get clean water, knowing how to purify it can save your life. The main two ways to purify water are either heating or filtering. So, the main aim of this project work was to learn how to make a simple water filter and to understand how we can filter water by using cotton, charcoal, sand, gravel and rocks. Pupils did a great job!

The main aim of this project work was to connect English and Science. Pupils watched a short video * DYI  water filter * in English, matched the English words for the substances and played puzzles. Next lesson they draw a water filter and labelled it with the words they learned.

As pupils in class 2A and 2Č already mentioned the words " molecules" and "atoms" , the teachers gave them an opportunity to have a lesson in a chemistry lab where chemistry teacher demonstrated the structure of a water molecule. Pupils learnt that red colour stands for oxygen and white for hydrogen. Pupils wondered why it isn't blue.  Then they learnt about the stucture of ice and what happens when we sprinkle salt on ice.

During Art lessons pupils made models of the structure of ice and a water molecule.

During physical education pupils represented  the atoms of hydrogen and oxygen  (having red and white circles on their T-shirts) and  played the game "Little Atoms". In another game they immitated ice, steam and liquid.

On 2 February,2019 pupils in class 4B and 4C studied  about water the whole day.  Class teachers, Italian and English teachers co-operated and implemented their good practice experience from the staff meeting in Lithuania in November, 2018. They invited other primary  teachers to observe the activities and  shared the Lithuanian  project – based learning - teaching experience with them.

All day pupils did experiments with ice, made a water filter, studied water cycle, draw water mills and learned new words  in all the three languages: Slovenian, Italian and English. They played games and  puzzles, solved quizzes, made art pieces about water. At the end they reported about their experience and were really excited about it.
